England Basketball Award Academy Status to Bristol Storm

In November 2007 Bristol Storm were accredited as an England Basketball Academy, this is an amazing achievement for the club who boast a comprehensive women's programme, a fast growing men's programme including the introduction of national league for the 2008/09 season and a very impressive community programme.

Not many clubs can boast such an amazing growth and success that Bristol Storm can. In less than a year an idea dreamt up between Bob Mason and Steve Brocklehurst has grown from a National League Women's team and a local league team into an organisation boasting eight teams, strong development links with five local secondary schools and forty-two primary schools, partnerships with New Deal development and the City Academy. All this led to the success of an England Basketball Four Star Award and the Clubmark status from Sport England, a partnership with Access Sport and just recently the Bristol Athletic 2012 Sporting Chance Award. An award given to Bristol Storm for their continued work in the community to open pathways for people to have the chance at sport, a programme that has seen basketball grow in popularity dramatically since its inception.

National League Women - Conclusions & New Season
May 2, 2008, 8:13 pm

Sometimes it is a bitter pill to swallow, when after a long season you finish without any wins.  You sit down and continue to work out what went wrong and why.

We didn't have the best of luck by a long way injuries seemed to mean not only was the team different nearly every game but also the starting five.  The loss of some players more long term also saw the team dynamic change and our style of play.

Just as we seemed to settle and start playing well we ended up with a break for Christmas, the first few games back we we're short but competed well.  This was becoming the story of the season, with our main team on the floor we competed with everyone, but again we just didnt have the luck, annoyingly not the depth at some away games.

As the season reached the last few games the frustration started to show for everyone, as we just couldnt find the win, even though our performances surely deserved one.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and the more I have looked at the way the season went I lay blame on finishing bottom squarely on my shoulders.  Watching the videos of the games I sometimes wondered who that was on the bench sitting there, my coaching style has always been very positive and vocal, but for most of the season I was a shadow of myself, it wasn't until the last few games when I had recovered from my back problem, was pain free and able to bounce around that I think I did the girls justice, for that I apologise.

I have a great squad of players more than able of competing in this division and finishing in the top half of the table, so with a slight change to our luck and a good pre-season, we're gonna show people exactly what this Storm can do.

Enjoy your summer, Brock
